This month, we are spotlighting Jacob Jones, who joined Ambit in 2023 as our Survey Field Technician.

Kevin Cunnagin shared, “Jacob is one of my favorite people. On and off the survey field he offers up a thoughtful and genuine presence. Jacob brings with him a love for the outdoors, solving survey puzzles, and a physical challenge; all things that I value in a crew member. I always enjoy catching up with Jacob in the field and hearing about his latest find whether it’s a photo taken, a rock found or a shirt thrifted. Jacob is a one of a kind teammate and I look forward to assisting him and watching him grow in his survey career.”

When you were young, what did you imagine doing when you grew up?

I bounced around from Paleontologist, to Marine Biologist, to Botanist, and to Professional Mushroom Forager…

Why did you decide to join the Ambit team?

It seemed like Ambit had a great team, and it was a good opportunity to travel to some of the weirder and more remote and interesting parts of the PNW.

What surprised you about Ambit since joining the team?

There’s a strong culture of teamwork and none of the office politics or inflated egos that can drag down many other survey firms.

What does a day in the life of your role at Ambit look like?

Drive three hours, then dig holes in the mud for a couple hours, before finally going to War with the blackberries.

It’s 50/50 if this happens along some beautiful scenic vista, or an industrial park in some mid-sized city.

What do you enjoy most about working at Ambit?

The independence and travel are definitely the best parts for me. I have been able to see so much of the area that I wouldn’t have otherwise. Once I’m full of thorns, I usually can find some time to look around at cool plants or check out a cool rock.

What’s your favorite way to spend your free time?

When I didn’t travel so much for work, I spent more of my free time hiking and exploring nature. Lately, I get my fill of travel and the outdoors, so I spend much of my free time playing video games.

What is the last show you binge-watched?

I think the last show I binge watched was Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, which is a very highly regarded Japanese cartoon. Before that I think it was probably my rewatch of Breaking Bad. I’m not much of a binge watcher, I think it can take away from the experience of watching the show.

Where is your favorite place to vacation?

The Southwest desert in general – and southern New Mexico to be more specific. I grew up in Texas and would often drive out to New Mexico on holiday breaks and camp around the state.

What is your drink of choice?

Coffee, or an Old Fashioned.

What’s one thing you do to take care of your mental well-being?

Playing video games, talking to strangers and meeting new people who live in my neighborhood. I have been making an effort to chat with people at the grocery store to bring back some of that community we’ve lost in the last 50 years or so.

What’s something about you that only a few people know?

If I told you, then everyone would know.
